Tulsi

Ocimum tenuiflorum

Tulsi is from the Lamiaceae family, also known as Labiatae, a member of the mint
family. It is a perennial herb. Its green leaves are a little hairy and flowers to a pinkish-
purple color. It is native to India but can be grown in several other countries.
Tulsi is also called Holy Basil. Its ritual uses in India are numerous. Hindu homes will
have a pot of Tulsi somewhere in the house! Tulsi is used in many rituals and
ceremonies. It is believed to increase purity and protection.
Tulsi is an adaptogen it is used for both the immune system and the nervous system.
Nothing soothes an aching heart or frayed nerves like a cup of Tulsi tea. I don’t believe
that there are many herbs that smell better than Tulsi. One slight smell of this delightful
herb and I find myself instantly transported to a place where kindness and gentle Spirits
dwell. It is truly heavenly!
If you have not yet experienced Tulsi, do so as soon as possible. I refer to her as Miss
Tulsi, I have titled her since our first meeting. She is indeed the Queen of herbs. All
herbs are special, mysterious and Goddess like. But she earns her name Queen of
Herbs. I believe you will fall in love with her at first taste or smell!
